We were saddened when the Cincinnati-based Nada closed in the Arena District. We’d had a number of good meals there over the 10+ years it was part of the neighborhood, either before shows at Nationwide Arena or Clippers games, or just for a fun dinner. But fortunately it wasn’t long before a newcomer filled its shoes: Viva Mexican Kitchen!

Viva is a project from the folks behind Dulce Vida, which has multiple locations around Columbus and produces some delicious ice creams and paletas.

They’ve done a nice job of updating the space while keeping its bright and open feel. I love their main dining room in particular!

We started off with a couple drinks, the boozy Mexican Old Fashioned and the refreshing hibiscus margarita.

The trio dip gives you a taste of their queso, guacamole, and pico de gallo. All good, although we wanted a little more salt in each one!

Nice edition of elote, topped with mayonnaise, cotija, Tajin, and lime.

The quesabirrias arrive as a trio of corn tortillas stuffed with shredded beef and cheese, served with a side of consommé for dipping.

I ordered the pork carnitas, served on a generous plate with beans, rice, and your choice of tortillas.

The Viva fajitas with steak are another monster portion. They arrive in style, loudly sizzling on the platter, and are served with rice, beans, pico, sour cream, lettuce, and tortillas.

The fried grilled burrito, as it’s labeled on the menu, is stuffed with your choice of chicken, steak, or shrimp, then fried up, covered with cheese, and served with rice.

Viva’s price point is maybe a little higher than other casual Mexican restaurants, but that reflects the general dining options around the Arena District, and the portions are pretty generous all-around.

    Viva Mexican Kitchen is open Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
