If I’m being honest with myself, what I’m really craving for breakfast 90% of the time is Mexican breakfast dishes at places like 3 Brothers Diner in Powell.

We’ve been fans of their original Grove City spot for years, but we finally visited their newer location in Powell for a full spread!

3 Brothers Diner was indeed started by three brothers, and if their food feels familiar to long-time central Ohio diners, it’s because you probably had a form of it at Starliner Diner in Hilliard over the years. From what I understand, the brothers worked in the kitchens at Starliner for many years before striking out on their own.

The Powell location is tucked into a strip along Olentangy Street, a little ways west of “downtown” Powell. They offer a big bar and size-able dining room, plus a patio.

Even though it was a weekday morning, we split a zesty Bloody Mary.

A round of their fried plantains (and maybe another order to go) is a MUST for the table.

I knew before arriving that I was ordering the chilaquiles with chorizo. It’s basically my favorite breakfast dish. What’s not to love about eggs, chorizo, cheese, black beans, chips? You can order verde or roja salsa; without hesitation, our server suggested the verde.

Another long-time favorite is the Cuban French toast. A loaf of Cuban bread is diced, breaded, and fried, then served with fruit, powdered sugar, and syrup.

We also couldn’t pass up the Azteca breakfast burrito, loaded with scrambled eggs, chorizo, refried beans, and jack cheese, then generally topped with ranchero sauce, sour cream, and queso fresco, and served with a side of home fries.

Even though we were there for breakfast, our server recommended trying their shrimp Creole macaroni. It’s a heaping plate of elbow macaroni mixed with shrimp, chicken, Cajun sausage, onions, corn, peppers, and tomatoes, all mixed in a rich, creamy Cajun sauce.

Every dish we had was a winner. And the portions were generous, so we brought plenty of leftovers home.

3 Brothers Diner is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they have a great happy hour from 3-6 p.m. daily. Hours are Sunday-Monday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Tuesday-Saturday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Get a quick look at their Grove City location, too!
