Ground beef is a staple in so many easy family dinners, but when prices are high, it doesn’t always make sense to reach for it every time. The good news is that so many of my favorite ground beef recipes work just as well with ground turkey, pork, chicken, or sausage. I love having that flexibility because it means you can shop what’s on sale, use what you already have in the freezer, and still make the dinner you were planning.

I pulled together some of my favorite ground beef dinners that are especially easy to swap with another ground meat. Think casseroles, pasta dishes, skillet dinners, and other family favorites where you can make a simple substitution without completely changing the meal. Use these recipes as a starting point, then choose whichever ground meat makes the most sense for your family and your grocery budget that week.

    1. Momma’s Meatloaf

This is the classic that started it all. The best meatloaf recipe ever, and it’s wonderfully forgiving when you want to mix things up. Swap half the ground beef for ground pork to get a richer, more complex flavor, or go full ground turkey for a lighter spin. That iconic glaze keeps every version juicy and absolutely unforgettable.

    2. Best Homemade Sloppy Joes

    Best Homemade Sloppy Joes

No canned sauce here! This is a from-scratch sloppy joe with real vegetables and a bold, tangy tomato base that carries any protein you throw at it. Ground turkey keeps it on the lighter side, while ground pork adds a slightly sweeter, melt-in-your-mouth richness the whole family will devour. Either way, this is one sandwich that’s anything but ordinary.

    3. Ground Beef Stroganoff

    Ground Beef Stroganoff

A creamy, from-scratch mushroom sauce that tastes like it took all day. Ready in just 30 minutes. The sauce is so rich and savory that ground turkey or ground pork fits right in without losing a drop of that deep, comforting flavor. It’s a weeknight lifesaver no matter what’s in your freezer.

    4. One Pot Spaghetti

    One Pot Spaghetti

Everything cooks together in one pot, so the pasta soaks up every bit of that rich, slow-simmered-tasting tomato sauce. Swap in ground Italian sausage for a little extra kick, or keep it lighter with ground turkey. The sauce is bold enough to make either option shine. One pot, minimal dishes, maximum flavor. Delizioso!

    5. Ground Beef Tacos

    Ground Beef Tacos

Taco night gets a serious upgrade with a homemade spice blend that blows any store-bought packet out of the water. Cooking those spices right into the meat means the bold cumin, chili powder, and garlic do all the heavy lifting, whether you’re using beef, turkey, or pork. Maximum flavor, any protein, every single time.

    6. Hobo Casserole

    Hobo Casserole

Tender potatoes, melty cheese, and a green chile cream sauce made completely from scratch, no canned soup in sight. The sauce is so packed with flavor that ground pork or a mild sausage fits right in alongside the beef without missing a beat. Pop it in the oven and let it do its thing while you catch your breath.

    7. Ground Beef Stew

    Ground Beef Stew

All the warmth and comfort of a classic beef stew, but ground meat makes it come together in a fraction of the time. My signature spice blend and Worcestershire sauce give it that deep, slow-cooked flavor that works just as beautifully with ground turkey if you’re looking for something a little leaner. Hearty, homey, and exactly what a cold night calls for.

    8. Jalapeño Cheddar Stuffed Meatloaf

    Jalapeño Cheddar Stuffed Meatloaf

A whole brick of cheddar in the middle, jalapeños on top, and a sweet-and-spicy glaze that you’ll want to put on everything. This is not your grandma’s meatloaf. With that much cheese and flavor packed in, ground turkey or chicken slides right in without sacrificing a single bit of the gooey, melty payoff. Slice into it and watch the cheddar spill out. It’s a showstopper every time.

    9. Best Baked Ziti Ever

A Slice of the Best Baked Ziti Ever on a spatula.

Best Baked Ziti Ever is cheesy, saucy, comforting, and an easy one to customize based on what’s on sale! The recipe calls for ground beef, but you can easily swap it for ground turkey, pork, chicken, or Italian sausage. Use what you have or grab whichever option fits your grocery budget that week. Dinner will still be delicious!

    10. Tasty Tater Tot Casserole

A piece of Tasty Tater Tot Casserole on a plate.

Tasty Tater Tot Casserole is an easy, comforting dinner that’s perfect for stretching your grocery budget. While the recipe calls for ground beef, don’t be afraid to swap in ground turkey, pork, chicken, or sausage instead. Use whichever ground meat is on sale or already in your freezer, then top it all off with those crispy golden tater tots!

You don’t have to cross a recipe off your meal plan just because ground beef isn’t in the budget that week. This is one of my favorite ways to make grocery shopping a little more flexible. Check the sales, see what ground meat is the best price, and make the swap that works for you. You might even discover that you like one of these recipes better with turkey, pork, chicken, or sausage!

I hope these ideas help take a little pressure off your grocery budget while still letting you put a homemade dinner on the table. If you try one of these recipes with a different ground meat, let me know what you used and how it turned out!
