The Dayou International Market opened last year on Bethel Road, bringing a wonderful selection of produces, meats, fish, and loads of international items to the city’s northwest side. And tucked into the market is a small food court that features a mix of Asian cuisines.

One of the central stalls is a newer addition called Tangho Kungfu Malatang!

Malatang is a Sichuan-style street food where customers build their own bowls of meats, veggies, and noodles, which are cooked in their choice of broth.

Guests have their choice of broths, which range in spice levels. We also chose the signature spicy hot pot and enjoyed it!

Off to the side is a small table with a stack of bowls. You simply grab a bowl, head to the cooler and start loading up!

Everything is nicely labeled, and organized in layers, with meats at the bottom, then mushrooms and veggies, noodles, and greens as you work your way up.

You’ll find everything from a variety of fish balls to sausages, tofu to quail eggs.

There’s a very heavy seafood focus to the lineup.

It’s fun to mix and match everything, and obviously you can customize to your heart’s content.

I especially liked the variety of mushrooms.

And you cap off your bowl with a choice of greens.

Once you’ve loaded up your bowl, you take it over to the counter where it’s weighed. The price is based on the weight; the meals are priced at $13.00 per pound.

You then tell them what broth you’d like, order any sides, and pay your bill. They’ll take the bowl in the back and cook it up together. It can easily be packaged to go, but there are a number of tables in the food court.

Note that many of the broths include a scoop of peanut butter you mix in; you can always request they leave it off.

We loved each of the bowls we constructed! All the separate ingredients were cooked just right, the broth is wonderfully flavorful.

They especially hit home when the weather is cold and blustery.

They feature a variety of sides, too. We loved the salt and pepper fried chicken, and the fried dumplings.

Tanghuo Kungfu Malatang opens Tuesdays through Sundays at noon and stays open “until late.”
