This train-loving family has discovered the most amazing getaway in the Hocking Hills: the railroad-themed Hideaway on the Hocking, constructed from a real historic train station and a series of refurbished cabooses!

Hideaway on the Hocking is located in Guysville, Ohio, about 20 minutes southeast of Athens, tucked into a long-time, family-owned property on a bend of the Hocking River.

In addition to a series of modern homes dubbed River Retreats and The Depot, Hideaway features five refurbished cabooses, too! (More on those below.)

We were very fortunate to get to stay in The Depot, a centerpiece of the property. The Depot is indeed a real, renovated train depot! They’ve preserved much of the character while updating it with comfortable modern amenities.

The Depot itself was the former train station in Millersport, Ohio, shipped all the way to southeast Ohio. There’s a great photo of it on the wall.

You’ll spend much of your stay spying out the various details and decor, from benches to model trains to lighting fixtures. It’s really fun to imagine all the travelers that passed through the building and all the trains that stopped there over past decades.

The Depot features a full kitchen with gas range, dishwasher, appliances – everything you’d need.

My favorite part of the kitchen was the table, squeezed into the old observation windows.

The Depot includes two queen bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The property also includes front and back covered decks, a hot tub, a firepit.

Even a picnic table under the old water tower!

Guests are welcome to use other parts of the Hideaway on the Hocking property, too, which includes a walking trail along the river.

(On our stay we enjoyed one day of blue skies and then it snowed overnight, so we got a solid sense of the grounds both with and without snow.)

And of course, you can admire the five cabooses all lined up in a row.

Each caboose is a different color, and has been renovated into modern accommodations.

They’ve added covered decks to the cabooses as well, so you can sit and face the fields and river. Each caboose has its own firepit out back, too.

The interiors are cozy but modern.

The number of beds varies, too. This one includes a pair of bunk beds in the center!

We loved our stay in The Depot! We spent two nights there, and used it as a little retreat to start off the year. The accommodations are hard to beat, and everything is modern and comfortable. The stay was perfect for hanging out, making meals together, reading, relaxing in the hot tub, hiking around the grounds.

The property is also easily accessible off major roads, so Hideaway would also serve as a terrific home base for hiking nearby parks and trails, or even visiting and exploring Athens. But with all the railroad-themed fun, you’ll probably be like us and you won’t want to leave the property!
