Who’s ready to build their own bowl or stir fry? Hey Broth Asian Street Food on Bethel Road in Columbus is the place to do it! They let you craft your own stir fry or malatang bowl.

Hey Broth opened recently in one of the city’s busiest international corridors, occupying the storefront right in front of the excellent Restaurant Silla Korean eatery.

The bright, new space features the buffet tables where you build your own bowls, plus a long counter and a small dining room. They seem to do a steady carryout business, too.

Until now, our one experience with malatang was through Tanghuo Kungfu Malatang, a stall in the Dayou International Market food court just down the road. Malatang is a form of personalized hot pot where you choose your ingredients and have them cooked up quickly in a bowl. The places we’ve experienced then charge you by the pound.

If you’ve never been, the servers there can give you a helpful rundown of the process, then you grab a bowl and fill it with your choice of ingredients.

There’s a huge selection of greens and mushrooms, meats and veggies…

    …noodles and sprouts…

    …and much more.

They also have a selection of pre-made sauces for dipping.

Once you’ve build your bowl, you take it to the counter to be weighed. You can choose your broth if you want soup, or you can choose to have it stir fried.

And you can add in small plates like edamame.

    Or some really delicious skewers.

In no time at all they’ll bring your bowl tableside.

And then you get to dig in!

Between the four of us we ordered two soup bowls and two stir fries.

    And we devoured it all!

They also just started serving taiyaki, little crispy fish-shaped treats with sweet fillings. We tried one with Nutella.

But the real dessert feature is the bingsoo (sometimes spelled bingsu), these giant shaved ice milk desserts topped with fruit, sauces, and other goodies. We tried the strawberry.

    And the mango!

And my favorite, the pistachio. All of them were giant, and the perfect cooling treat after a spicy bowl of soup.

Hey Broth is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
